Musical Directors

David Brooks & Jo Hodgson

David Brooks

A music teacher by day, Master-Director David commits a large amount of time to Wellington City Chorus, providing direction, coaching and strategic leadership.
David is notorious through the barbershop community as a 'numbers' man.
He has a passion for analysing scores and predicting wildcards!

Jo Hodgson

Jo holds Performance Certificates in Voice (Trinity) and Oboe (Royal Schools) and has taught music to children for over 20 years, bringing musical fun to hundreds of pre-schoolers as well as teaching singing to a range of students around the Wellington region, both in groups and individually.

As a choral singer, Jo was a foundation member of the New Zealand Secondary Students Choir and continued this wonderful training as a member of the New Zealand Youth Choir and Voices New Zealand chamber choir, Nota Bene, Baroque Voices and Inspirare and is currently co-musical director and vocal coach with Wellington Young Voices Childrens’ Choir.

A passion for music theatre has seen Jo tour New Zealand in the ensemble of Stetson groups, Evita, as well as taking on the roles of Grizabella in Cats for Wellington Musical Theatre, Mrs Noah in NZ Opera’s production of Britten’s Noye’s Fludde, Octavia in Paul Jenden and Gareth Farr's The Nero Show at Circa, Hida in Red Scare Theatre's premiere production of The Bone Thief, and loved being part of the ensemble in Witch’s production of Sweeney Todd.

She has enjoyed delving into musical direction with Stagecraft’s production of Bare: A Pop Opera; Silver Linings with Wellington Footlights; and Annie Jr with Hutt City Musical Theatre.

In 2021, Jo was a tutor at Te Auaha, teaching vocals on the Commercial Dance and Stage and Screen Actors courses.

Jo is very much looking forward to sharing her knowledge and love of singing and theatre, and developing a new skill learning Barbershop alongside David and Wellington City Chorus.
